Very Special Lady

This "torrential" downpour in Southern California has provided a great setting for trying to dig up some deets on Nathan McKinney and Desert Bone Records. Apparently, the info for this artist is pretty scarce, most of my search results are Youtube videos with "hynas" on cars and comments full of homies proclaiming  how this is a "firme rola" to which I emphatically agree! Both versions of this track are hard to come by, in fact I've only seen two copies of this ever. I have not been able to locate where D Bone Records was headquartered but based on the sound and label name, I am going to guess that this is from somewhere in Texas (don't hold me to that). Enjoy!

Risky

I have been indulging in the hyper active Los Angeles after hour party scene as of late, which had me neglecting my posting duties for some time. I am now back from an extended hiatus with lots of new tracks to share. Staying up till the day light hours in small warehouses with a bunch of fancy dancers had me in some kind of disco induced haze. So anyway, I have recently acquired a copy of this relatively unknown mid-tempo floor filler from Atlanta a few months ago after waiting for some years to finally get my hands on it. I had heard it played once but couldn't get the name. It haunted my ear drums for years but  I was lucky enough to have Lovetron and Luer from Orange County's Funk Freaks ID the track for me. I have not been able to find too much about Dass Records but I do know that their first release was by The Young Divines also titled "Risky". Not sure if this is a cover or not but either way, it just oozes class! Sorry again about the lack of posts, but I got some surprises coming up soon..... Stay tuned!

Messages From The Stars

The RAH Band is the brainchild of studio musician and producer Richard A. Hewson who had previously worked with such acts as The Beatles, Diana Ross, and Supertramp. This track needs no introduction, especially since it has been gaining traction after being played on a Stones Throw podcast via none other than Dam Funk a while back. This is one of those songs that immediately grabs your attention and never lets go, and I totally lose my shit once the synth solo starts. This is classic 1983 greatness, enjoy this track while spaced out!

I also have a special treat for all you boogie monsters out there! Snacking is one of my favorite past times, especially when those snacks come in the form of rare boogie tracks. This is a special mix put together by my man Eddy Funkster from L.A's Funkmosphere crew. From start to finish, this mix runs the gamut of hard to find songs and rarities. Per usual, this mix is all 45's and pure aural goodness! Track list will be up in the comments soon unless one of you is cavalier enough to provide it before I can.

Sweepin' Off

My brain was heavily serotonin deficient from desert parties and what not but I finally mustered the energy to share some tracks. First off is an Italo boogie track from 1983 by High Resolution! As usual the vocals leave more to be desired but the bass line is fresh! This was composed by Paolo del Prete and Marco Fatali and was released on SPQR.

High Resolution-Sweepin' Off
Next up are my two favorite tracks from Glenn Jones' 1984 LP called "Finesse" which came out on RCA Records. Both tracks have pretty dreamy synthesizers and Glenn's voice is spot on. Let me know how the tracks sound, I just got my vinyl ripping R2D2 working.

Skate JAM!

Spring is nearly upon us and that means that it is time to polish up those roller skates. This funky jam came out in 1978 on Earwax Records out of Detroit. I like its PROTO-proto house sound. I don't really know anything about the group other than that they put out a couple of LPs and singles. Their first record came out in1977 and is easier to find than their 1978 LP that contains this single. I think it is ripe for an edit to remove the chorus; here is what you need to make it happen.

Softly Shafted - By Hotthobo

Here is a special guest mix by our friend Randy Hotthobo Ellis, we hope you enjoy it. He used to run a night here in San Francisco called Grow Up. The name was a tongue in cheek poke at Blow Up, a dance party for barely post pubescent kids who wear neon. Grow Up was an adult party for well mannered boogie fiends. Firefly

We've covered Maurizio Sangineto's productions before on this site. Firefly was a dance music group composed of fellow Italians and released four LPs during their career. This track was a big tune at the Garage. The uplifting vocals get me every time. I also really like the brave use of some dynamic range in this 12" mix. It is rare to hear jams like this with such an impact when the beat comes in after the breakdown.

Here is a tight disco boogie jam especially for you. Have a great Labor Day weekend if you are one of the few that is employed; otherwise, enjoy vacation and the free tune.

serge

Serge Ponsar was a French-born musician who released one LP in 1983 called Back to the Light. His lone full-length belongs on a short list of '80s funk LPs that are solid start to finish. No need to get off the couch after one song to yank the needle off a sleepy slow jam. "Out in the Night" is one of the best tracks on his album and fortunately saw a 12" release cut nice and loud at 45rpm. This tune has a tough bass line and a certain French smoothness that work really well together.

Pretty Boys

Here is a raw track from the Bronner Brothers out of Atlanta. These Thriller-posing guys recorded two slick funk LPs then switched to gospel mode before dropping out of the music scene in '87. "Pretty Boys" is from their first 7" released on Neighbor Records in 1983. The track is minimal with no vocal harmony or overdubs, giving it a one-take feel. I dig the hesitant-sounding keyboard player paired with relentless, precarious slap bass riffs. This is an unintentionally perfect groove.

Little Mazarati

Mazarati are known for being an early Minneapolis based Prince produced side project, starring Prince And The Revolution bassist Mark Brown (also known by the bizarre stage name BrownMark). They put out two albums, Mazarati I & II, but are better known for the songs that Prince wrote for them, then took back after hearing the bands demos when he realized the songs had real potential to make some loot.

Amongst the weird and wonderful world of the Prince bootleg collector community, cassette tapes of early Mazarati studio sessions and unreleased material have long been prized. 'Little Mazarati', a mock up of a sort of title track for the band, was never released, and comes from such a traded stolen studio session tape, which then eventually made it onto a Prince Bootleg CD-r compilation in the late 1990's (hence its 128kps, which was standard back then in the olden days of dial up modems and ambient drum'n'bass).

This is some low-fi indie, stripped down boogie funk rock by one of the all time grand masters.

Come Back For Seconds

I grabbed this record whilst digging in Sacramento with my buddy from lazerfunk over the weekend. This record, still sealed was in a pile of MC Hammer 12"s and $10 Switched On Bach LPs on a lower shelf. I also got a couple of mint Aurra 12"s, some good jazz funk, and some Chi house heat. While I was down there I was crop dusted by some middle aged weirdo who was looking for a soundtrack to a movie that he couldn't remember. It was a nice and productive four day weekend that refused to be marred by all the wine and beer that went down my gullet. Not only did I get a grip of records for Beat Electric, I finally finished restoring my 1976 Bozak and it is sounding so smooth and punchy. I am going to have to put a booth together and record a mix!

This record seems to be pretty a rare 1984 release on Beverly Glen. This track mates this famous old gospel crooner's voice to disco strings and a sweet boogie bassline.

Looking Good

I usually like to give a bit of background on a record, but sometimes there just isn't much to go on. Looking Good was a release by Benton Baptist on Kalico records, what would become a short lived Soca and reggae label, probably owned by keyboard session player Dexter Daley. Maybe someone who was part of the Brooklyn Caribbean community back in the early eighties would know more. I have never come across another record by Benton Baptist, I suspect he was a member of the reggae scene that crossed over into the New York funk scene now and again like Denroy Morgan or similar. Anyhow, thats just a long winded way of me saying I don't know much about this cut, other than its a synth'y monster on lots of wants lists, and for those who may have heard the vocal version here and there I'm putting up the instrumental as well.

Let's Talk About the Fly Ones

Sometimes we like to kick it smooth. This is a rare modern soul jam from around 1985 on Money Three Records. It has a bit of a vibe as if Janet Jackson's mom is singing it. Anyway, you are too smart to miss the epic party that Beat Electric is throwing this Friday. It is at Mezzanine and it is free if you RSVP, just follow the instructions and make sure to drink a lot once you are there so we can throw this party again.

No Stranger To Love

This is one of those rare synth laden funk tunes that still manages to get name checked by the Northern Soul heads. I'm not a scholar of Northern by any means, but I know enough to know that those that are rarely feel anything out of my crates, there isn't much crossover, but Glenda Mcleod's No Stranger To Love is an exception. 'A Stafford classic!' they will say. I like Stafford, with it's easy access to the M6 and pleasant pedestrianized neo classical shopping precinct. This tune is great.

This Time

This groovy track has a lot going on. It is pure synth boogie mixed with proto garage flavor. It came out on Salsoul records in 1984 and it was produced by Randy Muller from Brass Construction and Skyy. I like that this vocal version has starts out giving you the woman's perspective in a deva-esque delivery and then the man gives his rebuttal in a well executed rap.

From Affinity to Infinity

This is a great 1983 track that came out on Mango records in 1983. It has a proto garage sound with a dark synth bass and cosmic synth sounds. It also has a really long janky keyboard solo up front that I love. Sorry my copy(s) are so jacked, I tried my best to remove the pops.

Uptempo

The one theme of continuity between the two tracks that I'am posting today are that firstly, they were both in front of me as I had recently listened to them, and secondly they are both high energy dancers but from opposite disco epochs, 1977 for Bionic Boogie's 'Boogie Boo' and..well, I don't know when the DJ Peebo did his JDC released "U.S Remix" of German new wave pop band Boytronic's Bryllyant as it's not on the label, I'm guessing 1987. Maybe I'm clutching at straws for a thin connection between the two simply because I wanted to post more than one records and didn't want to think hard about it. Oh, wait, they both have lots of B's in their names and titles. That's good enough for me.

The Sound That Blows Your Mind

This jam by The Bang Gang came out on Sugarscoop in 1981. It is an early track produced by the most prolific dance music producer of the 80s and 90s; Bobby Orlando. This track has a much more black and boogie oriented feel than the Hi NRG sound for which he is known. His most notable release was Passion by the Flirts. Bobby O has an interesting story. It turns out he was a religious, raging homophobe, but made the gayest music known to man. Being a short, sober man of epic self confidence, he set up lots of labels and produced lots of music just for the payday. I stumbled upon this amazing quote by the narcissist that was originally printed in music magazine The Face in 1987: "I regard each record I make as worthless and useless just like anybody else’s"..."Anybody who thinks that their music is something special is worshiping a false doctrine. There is nothing that any artist can say that is really of any importance because anything other than God’s word is laced with the evil and has to regarded as sin tainted." Mirage

Legendary dance music label Mirage Records was formed in 1980 by brother Bob and Jerry Greenberg, Bob holding down the West coast and Jerry setting up office in the East. Jerry had previously been the youngest ever major record company executive, moving to the top position at Atlantic Records at age 32, and both brothers had storied careers in the music and entertainment industry that continues to this day. They have restaurants in Vegas and Jerry was involved in Michael Jackson's music rights holding company, sitting as chairman for Michael throughout the 90's.

Mirage was famous for producing underground electro funk and freestyle records that successfully crossed over to the mainstream. A couple of years ago John Morales remastered a selection of Mirage releases from the original tapes for the small indie re-release label FTG (Funky Town Grooves) records, which released them as an under the radar CD compilation series in the UK. They look like low quality bootlegs from the photoshopped, cheaply printed covers, but they are legit. Please seek these out and buy all 3 volumes so I don't feel so bad about posting a few of these great remasters.

Wait.. I don't feel bad, here is the music:

Break Machine - Break Dance Party
First Love - Can I Be With You Tonight
Terri Jones - Do It Again Tonight
First Love - Give Me Your Love
Norma Jean Wright - Love Attack
Blue Magic - Magic Number
Ingram - Smoothin Groovin
Ingram - When You're Hot Your Hot
The System - You Are In My System
