Softly Shafted - By Hotthobo

Here is a special guest mix by our friend Randy Hotthobo Ellis, we hope you enjoy it. He used to run a night here in San Francisco called Grow Up. The name was a tongue in cheek poke at Blow Up, a dance party for barely post pubescent kids who wear neon. Grow Up was an adult party for well mannered boogie fiends. Gretchen's Illin' Tape, 6/22/86

We should probably take a breather for a few months while you all digest the collection that Black Shag just posted; but I think you might appreciate this mix.

Beat Electric reader Gretchen from Milwaukee sent me this cassette full of ghettoblaster jamz to rip and post on the blog. It is in the red the whole time, but what a killer set of tracks. Unfortunately, it looks like side B was taped over with Earth Wind and Fire, which cuts off the first two tracks and then resumes. Enjoy!

Midnight Star - Headlines
Lisa Lisa - Can You Feel The Beat
Davina - Rock, Shake, and Roll
King MC - What Have I Done For Your Lately
Carmen - Throw Down
World Class Wreckin' Cru - Mission Possible
Hanson & Davis - Tonight (Love Will Make It Right)
Model 500 - No Ufo's
Model 500 - Time, Space, Transmat
Johnny Kemp - Just Another Lover

Raw Boogie II: Liger Music Presents Spring Forward

Raw Boogie rears it's head one more time!

Here we are again, examining the tail end of what was once the disco era.
One thing all of these bands had in common was that they released very few records. Not one of them got signed to a major label during the extent of their career under this name. Closest would be The Tutt Band outta Phoenix, AZ, who had 2 singles on TK.

While many veteran soul men from the states threw in the towel during the "drum machine / rap" era, these steadfast musicians all persevered AND managed to hit the music equipment stores, effectively changing the sound of soul music at that time. This mix would be a celebration of persistence, foresight, and limited access to engineering. Boogie squared.

-Disco Tom

LIGER MUSIC 01:
SPRING FORWARD MIX

JBC Band - So In Love
McDouglas & Whitaker - Noise Break
Dorian - Stacked to the T
McDouglas & Whitaker - Prynce Birth
Tutt Band - Get On It

Silver Platinum & Gold - SPG Theme
Fresh Idea - One Time to Make it Bright (Tom Noble Edit)
Vernon Cheeley - Get to the Point
Assignment - Jammin' to the Beat
Command Performance - Breakdance (Tom Noble Edit)
Prophet - Stick it
Emerson - Sending all my Love Out

Blood From My Soul

I'am writing this from a hotel in Seattle, I have been spending the weekend wandering around waterfront, dodging in and out of shop doorways to avoid the rain and digging around through punk record stores to find to find the one or two black LP's that slipped through the net. If you are a Seattle native and know where I should have been looking and are willing to share, then by all means hit the comments button.

It seems fitting that seeing as my weekend has been slightly introspective and out of context that my offering today is also.

Around two summers ago I was riding my bike deep through the avenues, heading toward sunset beach, when I came by chance accross a garage sale. A gentleman was stood inside the garage door next to untold boxes of records, mostly marked 'funk', some marked 'disco', and I was casually told that he was clearing out some records to 'make space for more records'. It was a treasure trove, I remember being sold a clean copy of the Kebekektrik ep for $2 as well as a bunch of other cuts I still play out to this day, simply so the man could have an extra bit of room in his apartment. This is how I met DJ Om, part of the Bay Area's digging royalty.

Om can be credited with discovering and breaking many of the soulful funk jams found on the slew of Bay Area reissue compilations that came out over the last decade. He has traded or sold to DJ Shadow, Cut Chemist, Keb Darge, Jazzman Gerald, Soul Sam, John Manship, Egon, just to name a few, as well as playing out alongside acts such as Madlib, the Gza, Flying Lotus and Pharcyde. I only mention this so the proper weight can be attributed to the selection chosen for the new mix he debut's with Beatelectric today, many of these soul 45's are so completely off the radar that even if I did have a name for them it wouldn't make any difference, your not finding them, others are truly being broken for the first time, and a couple are simply classics.

Despite my pleading to the contrary he decided to give no playlist, but if you look into the broken heart depicted on the cover you can perhaps make out the writing on some of the records spilling out from the centre. As per usual, if you do a commendable job of ID'ing the tracks there is a Beatelectric t-shirt in it for you. Here is what Om had to say:

This is a chance to look into the mind, thoughts, and feelings of Deejay OM and experience the soul-wrenching and heart-shattering experience of my "break-up" or "heartbreak" mix. A mix which has great personal meaning, and was made as a means of healing my own pain. It is intended to be a panacea, a medicine which helps to heal others going through the same struggle. I've offered it as a free download so that it may spread and help to heal the wounds inflicted by those caught in the heat, or aftermath, of the hearts battle for love. It is a concept mix which is patterned after the thoughts, feelings, mixed emotions, and changes one goes through once the break-up begins and carries through to the end by dealing with what truly came to be...like it or not, it's about putting yourself on the line, being heart-broken, and learning to pick yourself up and move on. Each and every song has been hand picked because of content, feel, and overall message and was then placed in the mix corresponding to the stage of where one is at processing their lost love, and most importantly their own broken heart...music heals....and whether it's the music and bitter tears of Jesse James, the very rare Jackson 5 song and their hopeful search for something to fill that void in your heart, the anger of the Berwick Players, or the encouraging words of Frankie Beverly to dry your eyes and stop crying...I guarentee this mix will make you feel something deep down within. It is the blood from my soul...music for a heartbreak.

Guest Mix: Professor Eddy - Summer Grooves

Our guest mix comes from the Netherland's Professor Eddy, full of new soul classics it was apparently inspired by north western Europe's recent spate of fine weather. Eddy had this to say about himself..

"..From 1995 'till recently I worked for several local radio stations in the Netherlands and I always tried to play as much 'black' music as I could. Since April I have a daily show on the new online station Laid Back Radio (http://www.laid-back.be/online/online.htm). You can hear 'Soul Searching' from 9.00 to 10.00 hrs CET in the morning and from 19.00 to 20.00 hrs CET in the evening. I try to play the best soul music from the last 40 years. For me soul music began in the mid sixties when James Brown invented the funk with 'Papa's got a brand new bag'. The people from the Laid Back Show gave me the nickname 'professor Eddy' because of my musical knowledge (well, that's what they tell me, probably my glasses have something to do with it as well...).

In the past I've done some mixes for the weekly Laid Back Show on the local radio station FM Brussels as well, for instance 'Slow Disco 2' (http://www.laid-back.be/download/eddy14.htm or http://tinyurl.com/42fywq). But the weekly Laid Back Show has now become a 24 hours radio station on the web.

The idea behind 'Summer Grooves' was to make a sunny disco mix. Some joyful tracks from the late sixties to the mid eighties."

Here is the tracklisting and link to the mix:

(intro)
Michael McDonald – I Keep Forgettin’ (1982)
Don Blackman – Heart’s Desire (1982)
Creative Source – Good Lovin’ Is Good Livin’ (1976)
Sugar Hill Gang – Apache [12”] (1982)
Mongo Santamaria – Get Back (1969)
Gene Chandler – Get Down [Rick Giantos Special 12” Mix] (1979)
Joubert Singers – Stand On the Word [Larry Levan Remix] (1985)
Jeff Perry – Call On Me (1977)
Sunrize – I Need You More Than Words Can Say (1982)
Cool Notes – Why Not (1985)
ABC – King Without A Crown (1987)
Five Star – System Addict (1985)

Trocadero Live Mix, 1980 (FULL TRACKLISTING)

Addendum: Bobby Viteritti sent us a very nice email, the mix is indeed by him, and whats more he has now very recently released several of his classic mixes remastered on CD, available at his website http://www.bobbyviteritti.com/

The Trocadero was the US west coast’s most important dance club of the disco era and was one of a small pantheon of truly taste making venues around the country that included such luminaries as Paradise Garage, The Saint and The Trocadero’s sister club in New York, 12 West. I ride past what was the Trocadero every day, now a restaurant/bar called the Glas Kat on San Francisco’s 4th Street, on my way to the Caltrain station to take me south into silicon valley.

This mix was taken direct from the sound board of the Trocadero one night in 1980, recorded directly to quarter inch tape, it is a rare, high fidelity piece of history and indicative of the Trocadero sound a few years before high nrg diluted the format, the selection is underground and soulful but to me seems slightly more electronic for its time than mixes and snippets you hear from contemporary clubs of the era on the east coast.

There is a mystery attached to this mix though, the old veteran in San Francisco’s Castro who passed it on to me did not know who the DJ was that night, so I can’t give the correct credit to whomever executed it, but the resident DJ at the time would have been the venerable Bobby Viteritti so indicators would point to him, still it could still have been any one of a handful of well known DJ’s that passed through the booth to play on that famous sound system. Here is the track listing, enjoy!:

Change – The End
Sabu – We’re Gonna Rock
Erotic Drum Band – Touch Me Where It’s Hot
Ann Margret – Midnight Message
Wardell Piper – Super Sweet
The Ritchie Family – Quiet Village
Dive Grey & The Oyster Band – Hotel Paradise
Cerrone – Call Me Tonight
Erotic Drum Band – Pop Pop Shoo Wah
Theo Vaness – No Romance Just Wanna Dance
Theo Vaness – Sentimentally It’s You
Persia – Inch By Inch
Vera – Take Me To The Bridge
Don Ray – Got To Have Lovin
Sylvia Love – Instant Love
Lust - Rinder & Lewis
