Grand Master Lover

Someone asked me to post the other side of this record from this mix. Obviously I've been slacking on that request and eventually I came to terms with the fact that deep down I feel like keeping that one as a secret weapon. I'll make up by sharing the B-side which is a little more abstract but still equally great. O'mar was a pioneering producer and vocalist from St. Louis who self-released several records during the early '80s. PB Wolf is known to rinse his incredible "Grand Master Lover" tune.  P.M. Affair comes off O'Mar's other great release and features his trademark hypnotic chorus chants and oddball synth sounds. This is indie left field disco at its best.

More Patrick Adams

Time to keep chipping away at the Patrick Adams discography with this 1977 gem. This track features his classic Arp 2600 patch and some dubbed out production. For the sound quality nerds, this is recorded from an original 1977 copy not one of the similar looking recent represses. There is a bit of tape noise particularly during the breakdown probably due to the open extended remixing. This track was also sampled/replayed by the Sunburst Band with their song "Everyday".

Gloria Ann Taylor

I hope you don't mind if I change it up and post something a bit different (less electric) than most of the material here. I think this record should appeal to many of our readers as fans of soul and left field disco.

The release date of the elusive Deep Inside You EP on Selector Sound is unknown, but I think tracks were probably remixes of material recorded much earlier, updated for the disco era. "Love Is A Hurting Thing" was also released on a 7" with the instrumental on the flip (listed as "How Can You Say It"), though this shorter version lacks the disco back beat and loose dub mixing style heard on the 12". It was probably the best pull of my record digging career when I found this last weekend at what Black Shag would call a car boot, and I am glad to share it with you all.

African Suite

So I have been wrestling with a new recording set up for the past few days, I would take a picture of it for you with my digital camera if it were not for the fact that I dare not plug another piece of technology into this new machine for fear may cause it to burst into flame and my brain to have an embolism.

As well as finally setting this laptop up with software to record I got a new turntable, a Pro-Ject Xpression ii, that came with a Dynavector 10x4 cartridge going into my (sort of) new Roksan preamp, which goes out line level into my MOTU interface. Some poor guy in Florida was forced to sell it cheap by a nagging wife who wanted the living room back, and as a result Beatelectric has a new rig.

I did this recording pretty much dry aside from some normalizing in order to get a measure of how it all sounds, but anyway..enough of the nerd talk, on to the deep afro disco..

African Suite has been talked about a lot due to it's reissue last year, and so I decided to record the choice medley from the B side in it's entirety, as all the best break and hooks are there amongst the pounding tribal percussion.

Richie Rome was given free range to produce this album after his success with the Richie Family. It's concept it pure sexually charged deep disco, with hard Afro rhythms, each track blending perfectly into the next:

In The Pocket (3:09)
Vibes (4:38)
Young Stuff (4:13)
African Suite Reprise (1:20)
