A plea to the people

Unfortunately, I have some bad news. BT Magnum is in Europe bringing sweet boogie flavor to dance parties all over and just got all of his records jacked while on a train to Amsterdam. If you are over in that neck of the woods and you see someone pedaling raw, sick ass heat, please bring it to the attention to the authorities! These records took years, lots of cheddar, and countless hours avoiding work; help him out if you can!

Here is a loft jam in mourning.

Space

Space was a space disco group from Marseilles, France. This one comes off the 1977 Metropolis release. It is still the most epic space disco track ever. The pic above was from my trip to Malibu over the holiday where I was visiting and partying with some good friends who live next to Babs, Mccaughney, and Hans Zimmer . A washed up (so to speak) drunken sailor beached his 37' recording studio in this precious paradise while in-route to LA from Santa Barbara. He and his two cats survived. I threw my back out removing a strange piece of gear that would have been better served as a boat anchor.

If you are near Davis on Friday, come to the Delta of Venus where Dog Tones and I will be spinning funk, soul, and rare disco.

Set Me Free Tonight

It feels like summer is finally here. In California we had a pretty wet spring and now that it has dried out I am fiending for a matinee disco party in the sun. Beat Electric has a mobile system, lazers, and fog, make it happen!

This slammin' cosmic disco track by Danny Darrow was self produced and came out on Mighty records out of NYC in 1979. That is about all of the info that I have. I enjoy the janky live mix sounding production with all of its lack of compression and even the hot spots; you can really tell that this long version is just a tape edit. Sorry the beginning of this record has a weird sound, my record is a bit of warped.

Who's Getting It

We have put up some early eighties offerings from New Orleans disco funk outfit Chocolate Milk before, but I flipped over their 12" 'Who's Getting It Now' this afternoon and was reminded of how funky the instrumental is. A great long running hi hat driven intro for the DJ's amongst us. I heard these guys reformed and played some shows around Louisiana a couple of years back, I wonder if they ever make it out of their home state.

As an added weekend bonus here are some 1980 cosmic disco sound library joints from Gianni Safred, Django Reinhardt's keyboard player (?).

Good And Tight

This is a heavy cosmic disco track that is almost guaranteed to get you laid this Valentine's Day. Demis has had a long and storied career of swooning schmaltzy tunes but he put out a couple of great disco records. You can find another one of his tracks in the tags section. Also here is a slow jam to help you seal the deal.

Above & Beyond

I haven't been home much lately. I haven't posted much lately. I haven't been to the gym much lately. What I have done though is work, work, work.
But it's Friday, it's Fleet Week in SF and I finally remembered on the right day it is my time to post.
What I have this week is Edgar Winter's instrumental track "Above & Beyond". It's bad ass and full of amazing sonic ear candy. It's cosmic, it's weird and it is made Mr. Winter who looks as though winter landed all over him.
I scored this record, actually 2 copies of the white label, nicely filed in alphabetical order whilst digging at a record store. Talk about a score.
Enjoy.

I'm Going To Go

"I'm Going To Go" by Jago is a synth masterpiece. The simple yet effective bass line stands out in front as the rest of the song grows around it. It's not a terribly complex song, each piece has its moment to shine and then sort of ducks back into the arrangement. What it is for me is just a wonderful display of melody and structure that really grooves on the dance floor. I prefer the instrumental to the vocal, which I feel is less over the top Italo. The 12" recorded here was released in 1983 on Full Time Records.

Happy Is The Only Way

Admittedly, I have a very soft spot for mid 70's jazz/funk. Places and Spaces by Donald Byrd with the Mizell Brothers production team has been in my top five favorite LP's for a good ten years now. When I first heard this record several weeks ago, I was instantly brought back to the period of my life when I salivated over this kind of crap.

In his time, Patrick Adams produced many, many records of varying styles under a myriad of aliases. Sine was Adam's first of several collaborations with a very young label known as Prelude Records in 1977. Prelude was still trying to find its footing at this juncture basically hiring Adams to produce a jazzy cosmic record released under the guise of disco. Don't get me wrong, this album completely blows me away but only in the loosest terms would I categorize it as disco.

Armed with his signature 70's (see Cloud One) Arp 2600 synth sound, it feels as if Adams and co. wrote the entire record in the studio and jammed it out in a few sessions. The end result is a very raw yet cohesive LP.

This album cover absolutely kills me. Need a time machine now, damnit.

Don't Stop

"Don't Stop" by Ish is one of those sultry tracks that climbs and climbs, the lyrics and the music simply oozing sexuality. I love the escalating breakdown with the moaning and breathy vocals over it. Pure genius. It's a little cosmic, a little synth and a little disco all sort mixed up in this perfectly seductive tune that grooves on and on. It really does feel so good.
