Gimme Your Love

Though he is from New York City, DJ and producer Tony Carrasco is considered a pioneer of the Italo Disco sound.  This is a recurring theme in the history of recorded music, Americans being unable to recognize and appreciate the quality of their own most talented musicians.  Many of Tony's productions never saw a proper U.S. release. His most famous contribution to dance music was being one half of Klein & M.B.O. and co-writing and producing the classics "Dirty Talk" and "Wonderful".
Here is one of Tony's harder to find productions, an Italian-only 12" from 1983 under the group name Gongs Gang.  This tune is an excellent piece of Italo-boogie and fortunately the vocals aren't too wonky to screw up the great production.

update: instrumental added by request. enjoy.

Living

Italian bassist and songwriter Davide Romani played and produced tracks for such greats as Change, High Fashion, BB&Q Band, Peter Jacques Band. Traveling between New York and Milan throughout the early mid eighties to use American session musician's in Goody Music's Italo styled productions.

Island And Holiday's 'Living' appeared as a Davide Romani solo produced B side to the forgettable 'In The Summer Time', a soft synth disco remake of We Are All Going On A Summer Holiday. It borrows some of the themes from the A side, but cuts out all the whack parts and turns it into a rolling Italo Funk instrumental.

Do You Wanna Funk?

This is one of my favorite roller rink ready italo boogie jamz. In fact, it reminds me that I need to get some fresh bladez and shadez for the roller disco at Mezzanine at the end of the month. Digital Emotion was a Dutch italo group and this record came out on Break Records in 1983. This track is also called Get Up Action.

RFC/ATLANTIC

The late Ray Caviano was the A&R man for T.K. Records and its offshoot Marlin during the peak 70's disco era signing Voyage, Kat Mandu and a slew of other artists. Caviano left T.K. in 1978 to become the Executive Director of Disco (dream job) at Warner Brothers Records. Warner gave him his own imprint RFC Records titled after his initials. Caviano executive produced many LP's and 12"s in the late 70's/early 80's for Warner/Atlantic and struck up a partnership with Quality Records in Canada with some notable releases from Jimmy Ross and A Number of Names amongst others. Today I am posting a few jams from the RFC/Atlantic stable circa '81-'83. All told, if you are out hunting for disco or boogie 12's and see the RFC imprint it's quite likely you will have a pretty decent cut on your hands.

Tomorrow's Edition - U Turn Me On

Prestige - Cheating
Suzy Q - Get On Up Do It Again
Attitude - We Got The Juice
Change - This Is Your Time

Italo Boogie

It's Tuesday and I am a little brain dead from the long holiday weekend, so I feel it may be time to get my head working again and nerd out on a micro genre. In terms of its lifespan, Italo Disco somewhat quickly morphed into the High NRG cheese sound, but in its first several years it seemed to take more influence from American R&B than synthy Euro-Pop. I like to call this early incarnation (roughly 1980-1982), Italo Boogie.

The ubiquitous studio group Kano (which is credited for first ushering in the italo sound) had its finest moment in 1981 with "Don't Try To Stop Me" from their second LP entitled New York Cake. Boeing dropped only one 12" in their very short career, 1982's "Dance on the Beat". Both tracks are strong examples of Italo Boogie steeped in the disco-funk sounds coming from across the Atlantic with a little added euro flavor. I just checked out this mix from Ebony Cuts which presents many more examples of Italo Boogie jams.
