Not one of them got signed to a major label during the extent of their career under this name. Closest would be The \u003Cspan class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_0\"\u003ETutt\u003C\/span\u003E Band outta Phoenix, AZ, who had 2 singles on \u003Cspan class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_1\"\u003ETK\u003C\/span\u003E.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EWhile many veteran soul men from the states threw in the towel during the \"drum machine \/ rap\" era, these steadfast musicians all persevered AND managed to hit the music equipment stores, effectively changing the sound of soul music at that time. If you are a Seattle native and know where I should have been looking and are willing to share, then by all means hit the comments button. \u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003EIt seems fitting that seeing as my weekend has been slightly introspective and out of context that my offering today is also. \u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003EAround two summers ago I was riding my bike deep through the avenues, heading toward sunset beach, when I came by chance \u003Cspan class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_2\"\u003Eaccross\u003C\/span\u003E a garage sale. A gentleman was stood inside the garage door next to untold boxes of records, mostly marked 'funk', some marked 'disco', and I was casually told that he was clearing out some records to 'make space for more records'. It was a treasure trove, I remember being sold a clean copy of the \u003Cspan class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_3\"\u003EKebekektrik\u003C\/span\u003E \u003Cspan class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_4\"\u003Eep\u003C\/span\u003E for $2 as well as a bunch of other cuts I still play out to this day, simply so the man could have an extra bit of room in his apartment. This is how I met DJ Om, part of the Bay Area's digging royalty.\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003EOm can be credited with discovering and breaking many of the soulful funk jams found on the slew of Bay Area reissue compilations that came out over the last decade. He has traded or sold to DJ Shadow, Cut Chemist, \u003Cspan class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_5\"\u003EKeb\u003C\/span\u003E \u003Cspan class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_6\"\u003EDarge\u003C\/span\u003E, \u003Cspan class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_7\"\u003EJazzman\u003C\/span\u003E Gerald, Soul Sam, John \u003Cspan class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_8\"\u003EManship\u003C\/span\u003E, Egon, just to name a few, as well as playing out alongside acts such as \u003Cspan class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_9\"\u003EMadlib\u003C\/span\u003E, the \u003Cspan class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_10\"\u003EGza\u003C\/span\u003E, Flying Lotus and \u003Cspan class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_11\"\u003EPharcyde\u003C\/span\u003E. I only mention this so the proper weight can be attributed to the selection chosen for the new mix he debut's with \u003Cspan class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_12\"\u003EBeatelectric\u003C\/span\u003E today, many of these soul 45's are so completely off the radar that even if I did have a name for them it wouldn't make any difference, your not finding them, others are truly being broken for the first time, and a couple are simply classics.\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003E\u003C\/div\u003E\u003Cdiv\u003EDespite my \u003Cspan class=\"blsp-spelling-corrected\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_13\"\u003Epleading\u003C\/span\u003E to the contrary he decided to give no \u003Cspan class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_14\"\u003Eplaylist\u003C\/span\u003E, but if you look into the broken heart depicted on the cover you can perhaps make out the writing on some of the records spilling out from the centre. I ride past what was the \u003Cspan class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_4\"\u003ETrocadero\u003C\/span\u003E every day, now a restaurant\/bar called the \u003Cspan class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_5\"\u003EGlas\u003C\/span\u003E Kat on San Francisco’s 4\u003Cspan class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_6\"\u003Eth\u003C\/span\u003E Street, on my way to the \u003Cspan class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_7\"\u003ECaltrain\u003C\/span\u003E station to take me south into silicon valley.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EThis mix was taken direct from the sound board of the \u003Cspan class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_8\"\u003ETrocadero\u003C\/span\u003E one night in 1980, recorded directly to quarter inch tape, it is a rare, high fidelity piece of history and indicative of the \u003Cspan class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_9\"\u003ETrocadero\u003C\/span\u003E sound a few years before high \u003Cspan class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_10\"\u003Enrg\u003C\/span\u003E diluted the format, the selection is underground and soulful but to me seems slightly more electronic for its time than mixes and snippets you hear from contemporary clubs of the era on the east coast.\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EThere is a mystery attached to this mix though, the old veteran in San Francisco’s Castro who passed it on to me did not know who the DJ was that night, so I can’t give the correct credit to whomever executed it, but the resident DJ at the time would have been the venerable Bobby \u003Cspan class=\"blsp-spelling-error\" id=\"SPELLING_ERROR_11\"\u003EViteritti\u003C\/span\u003E so indicators would point to him, still it could still have been any one of a handful of well known DJ’s that passed through the booth to play on that famous sound system.
