Contrary to popular belief, Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch's 1991 hit Good Vibrations was not the first hip house track. Fast Eddie invented it; Tyree laid claim to the first hip house track on wax with the 1989 release of Turn Up The Bass, but UK's the Beatmasters say they preceded him by three years. As seen in this documentary, there are fine lines between hip house, rap house, house rap and you name it. The genre grew a lot in the 90's and saw a lot of success on the radio but it morphed into something very 90's. These Chicago early hip house cuts show a lot of classic house and acid elements. Tyree and Fast Eddie's earlier tracks were classic acid house with little, if any, vocal.

ReplyDeleteNot sure if 'Hip House' started in 88 or 89 & not sure if 'Turn Up The Bass' was first or not. 2 me 'Fast Eddie' was probably the first-'Jack 2 The Sound LP' was a good example. Although there's been loads of 'House' & 'Acid House' with Rap,doesn't mean it's 'Hip House'-otherwise loads of stuff would predate 'Fast Eddie'-like 'Rock Da House-BEATMASTERS & COOKIE CREW','MR LEE',etc,etc.

The first 'Hiphouse' record to come out of Chicago.
Shadows Of Your Love is just one of those Deep Chicago jackin' tunes with on the credits some big and known names.
Good produced and to this day a quality tune.
Music Is The Key is DEEP and soaked with emotions and soul.
Very well programmed drum patterns and a good deep string to lift you up with the vocals of Lewis Bledsoe , Sampson 'Butch' Moore and Keith Nunnally.
Also the 'rap' performed in this track makes this prolly the 1st Hiphouse track to come out of the windy city.

This track is made in 3 days time, originally Steve Hurley would sing the vocals but Farly said it was too bad, people would be scared so then Keith Nunnaly did the vocals.

ReplyDeleteIt wasn't Music Is The Key either. I do agree just having a rap doesn't make it hip-house. Then you'd be saying Z-Factor/Jesse Saunder's "The DJ" in '84 would be the very first as it was out before "Music is the Key." Coming from Detroit we followed Chi closely and I remember Mr. Lee as the first to base his music completely around a rap. He also had the biggest success then signing to Jive with videos as well.
