Satisfy Your Every Need


Although Oakland is only a few miles from San Francisco, it is a world away in most regards. Oakland is notorious for its murder rate, car theft, and phyfe side shows these days. There is a huge art community that moved in, lured by the cheap rent; however, there are very few opportunities for people. Another depressing aspect is that there are few places for musicians to play. When I lived there in the mid 90's I watched 3 venues close their doors. About all that was left were the punk club on Gilman street and the Stork Club.

When you hear this track you get the impression that things were not so bad in 1980.

    I came up in tha' 80's ...have a conciousness pre-hip hop ... pre-Reagan's crack induced Orwellian State ...

    though I live in tha' present & find so many soundz that move and excite me today I will always be homesick.

    I believe the sounds and the vibez you showcase are the last of the positive "party-UP" vibrations ... since then we've moved into "party-DOWN" ... hard pressed ta' find that sunshine soul in todays scene. But, hey, that's evolution ...

    I'm hoping we can ALL look to a day not too far away when we feel the good vibe D.M.S.R wave wash our shores again.

    "Hyphy" was spelled "Phyfe" on an NPR report I heard a couple of years ago. Maybe they have now dropped the p. I doubt people in that scene are very good at spelling. I live near Fairfield, which is a phyfe mecca. I love the 1987 Cutlass Cieras with 24" rims.
